The sitter is the Boston photographer F. Holland Day, who posed himself as Christ, with a crown of thorns, for this re-photograph of a plate from *The Seven Words*. Made in 1898, the series took its title from the seven phrases traditionally attributed to Jesus on the cross, and the platinum printing gives the tableaux a soft, painterly tone. Day's staging, with its carved architectural frame and inscription, reflects his interest in sacred art and theatrical display, and the work provoked strong reactions when it was shown. This copy reproduces the series as it was published, not the original plate.
