Titled *Good shepherdess*, this hand-colored lithograph was drawn on stone by Nathaniel Currier and issued from his New York shop around 1846, about a decade before he took James Merritt Ives into partnership. Its pastoral subject of a shepherd's care for her flock drew on the devotional and sentimental imagery popular in middle-class homes of the period. Hand coloring, often applied by workers in stages, gave these inexpensive prints a warmth that made them resemble finer paintings. The sheet is listed as no. 2655 in the Currier & Ives catalog raisonné compiled by Gale Research.
