Here a group of Methodists sets out together on the road to a camp meeting, the open-air revivals that drew families from farms and scattered settlements across the American frontier. Jacques Gérard Milbert, a French traveler who toured the United States in the years after 1815, made the original drawing, and Dubourg engraved it in aquatint, with the color added by hand. Camp meetings grew out of the Second Great Awakening, and Methodist circuit riders built much of their following at such gatherings, so the procession records a movement spreading fast through the rural interior.
