This aquatint, hand colored and dated to about 1819, shows an Anabaptist baptism in North America, a rite that sets this scene apart from the church interiors and town views common in early American prints. The drawing is by Jacques Gérard Milbert, a French artist who traveled in the United States in the years just before it was made, and it was engraved by M. Dubourg. Anabaptist groups such as the Mennonites and the German Baptist Brethren practiced adult baptism, often by full immersion in running water, and European readers were drawn to such accounts of religious communities that seemed foreign to them. The hand coloring adds detail to the clothing and setting.
