Goodwin & Company, a New York tobacco firm, issued this card in its Old Judge cigarette line, and the N173 designation marks it as one of the series that collectors later catalogued by the American Card Catalog. In the late 1880s, cigarette makers tucked photographs of ballplayers and other celebrities into their packs to build brand loyalty, and this one follows that practice. The image is an albumen print, a process that binds silver to paper with egg white and was standard for photographs of this period. The cabinet-card mount, a larger format than the small cards of earlier decades, shows how the photographic trade and the tobacco trade overlapped in the era.
