Issued by Goodwin & Company, the New York tobacco firm, this cabinet-size albumen print on card stock belonged to the Old Judge series. The company tucked cards like this into its cigarette packs to build brand loyalty, and baseball suited the purpose well, since the sport was drawing large crowds and its stars were widely recognized in the late 1880s. Dated 1888 to 1889, the issue shows how early photographic portraiture and tobacco advertising shaped the look of American sports fandom. It is preserved here as part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards from the period.
