Issued by Goodwin & Company, a New York tobacco firm, this Old Judge card takes its name from the cigarette brand it came packed with. Companies slipped such cards into their packages in the late 1880s to win customer loyalty, and the cards became an early visual record of the game. Catalogers now know this set as N172, and the title "Old Judge" is a label the Library's staff assigned, not text printed on the card. The card belongs to the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards in the Prints and Photographs Division.
