Lawyer William Hastie appears with seven young members of the NAACP youth council in Louisville, Kentucky, in this group portrait. Hastie had taught law at Howard University and worked on legal challenges to segregation before becoming governor of the Virgin Islands in 1946 and, in 1949, the first African American to serve as a federal appeals judge. The NAACP's youth councils trained teenagers and young adults in organizing and civic action, and this photograph preserves the names of those who took part in Louisville's chapter.
