The particular interest here is the setting: a federal judge seated among Alaska Native chiefs at Fairbanks, a town that was still young when this was taken between 1900 and 1907. James Wickersham had been appointed a federal judge for the Alaska district in 1900, and his court rode a vast territory where he often had to deal with Native communities over land, law, and local disputes. The photograph belongs to the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection at the Library of Congress, which makes it a useful record of how these meetings were staged and recorded in the early years of American rule in Alaska.
