Redding, Connecticut, is a small town in Fairfield County, and this view of its woods is a landscape study rather than a record of any particular event. Paul Caponigro, who worked mainly in black-and-white and was known for his close attention to natural textures and light, made the photograph in 1969, with the print dating from 1973. The record notes that some of its data comes from an unverified caption card, so the exact circumstances of the exposure are not documented. Viewers may want to look at how the trees and undergrowth fill the frame and how the soft tonal range carries the quiet of a New England wood.
