Titled *The manger*, this photogravure turns a scene of a mother nursing her infant into a religious image, and its subject headings place it among portrayals of the Virgin Mary. It was made around 1900 by the Camera Club of New York, a group that championed photography as an art form and favored soft focus, tonal depth and carefully composed figures over sharp documentary detail. Photogravure, a photomechanical process that transfers an image to a copper plate for printing, gave these pictures the rich, velvety tones that pictorialists prized. The original negative dates to 1899, and Frances Benjamin Johnston gave the print to the Library of Congress in 1948.
