A girl listening intently to "the witch-tales 'at Annie tells about" gives this platinum print its particular character, since the title is a line of dialect verse rather than a plain description. The phrase comes from James Whitcomb Riley's poem "Dream Children," which Elizabeth B. Brownell illustrated for a Bowen-Merrill edition published in Indianapolis in 1901. Platinum printing, prized around 1900 for its soft tonal range and matte surface, suited the gentle, storybook mood of such book illustrations. The record also notes that the work was earlier attributed to the photographer Emma Justine Farnsworth.
