Novelist William Dean Howells, the realist who edited the *Atlantic Monthly* and wrote *The Rise of Silas Lapham*, sits for this portrait by Zaida Ben-Yusuf, a photographer known for her studies of notable sitters in New York and London. The image is a platinum print, a process prized around 1900 for its soft tonal range and matte surface. It was reproduced in the *Saturday Evening Post* in June 1901, when Howells's literary reputation was at its height. The print later entered Frances Benjamin Johnston's collection of artistic photographs, which offers a useful trail for anyone tracing how such portraits circulated.
