Weston made this photograph of a cypress root at Point Lobos, the rocky headland south of Carmel, California, where the wind-shaped trees and weathered stone became some of his most sustained subjects after he settled nearby in 1929. The record dates the negative to that year and the print to 1971, when it appeared in a portfolio issued by Witkin and Berley, though those details come from a caption card and have not been independently verified. The twisted root, its forms pressed against the ground, shows the close, abstract approach Weston developed in the late 1920s, when he turned away from pictorial effects toward sharp focus and the structure of natural forms.
