Sixteen sequential frames show a racehorse called Annie G. in full gallop, each one catching a different moment of the stride. Eadweard Muybridge made the series with a row of cameras fired by trip wires, a method that let photographers freeze motion too quick for the eye to follow. This collotype comes from *Animal Locomotion*, the 1887 publication in which Muybridge gathered his studies of people and animals in motion. Its plates were among the first clear evidence that a galloping horse, at some point in its stride, has all four hooves off the ground, a question that had long been argued by painters and horsemen.
