Promising travel to Japan, India, France and South America, this color lithograph from Little Rock recruits young men to the Navy with the promise of skills and savings. Printed by the Joplin-Pugh Advertising Agency sometime between 1914 and 1918, it belongs to a wave of American war posters that linked military service to self-improvement. Its caption urges readers to become self-reliant, a master tradesman or mechanic, and warns them not to wait, since this is their real chance. The poster sells the Navy less as combat than as a route to independence and a trade, an appeal aimed at working men during the First World War.
