Its subject headings name a drawbridge in Tokyo and foreign visitors there, a pairing that points to the decades after Japan opened its ports in the 1850s, when Western travelers and diplomats began moving through the capital. The record gives the date as 1750, yet it lists Isoda Koryūsai, who was active in Edo from about 1764 to 1788, as the artist, so the dating is uncertain and should be checked against other sources. Koryūsai was a leading ukiyo-e printmaker and painter of the Edo period, and his drawings often show the everyday life of the city, which makes a view of its bridges and visitors worth a close look.
