The subject here is a rainbow arching over a river in western Siberia, a scene the picture's record names directly. It dates to 1912 and survives as three black-and-white glass negatives, each made through a different colored filter in the three-color separation method. Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii used this technique across the Russian Empire from about 1909 to 1915, on a commission from Tsar Nicholas II to document the land and its people. Combining the three exposures later allowed color to be reconstructed from plates that recorded only light and dark.
