This wood engraving of Sylvester Graham, the minister and dietary reformer, was published in *Harper's New Monthly Magazine* in 1880, nearly three decades after his death in 1851. Graham, a Presbyterian minister, promoted coarsely ground whole-wheat flour, plain vegetables and water, and temperance, arguing that simple eating would calm the passions and improve health. Flour and crackers that still carry his name grew out of those ideas. Magazine portraits like this one, cut in wood for mass printing, helped keep his reputation alive long after his public campaigns had ended.
