Shirley Graham, a writer and composer who later married W. E. B. Du Bois in 1951, appears in this gelatin silver print dated July 18, 1946. The photographer, Carl Van Vechten, made a large body of portraits of writers, performers and artists in the mid-twentieth century, and his collection at the Library of Congress keeps this image under its original Van Vechten number. Graham had already written an opera, *Tom-Tom*, and biographies, including one of Frederick Douglass, so the portrait captures a figure active in American music and letters before her marriage linked her to one of the country's best-known intellectuals.
