Thomas Wolfe, the Asheville-born novelist who wrote *Look Homeward, Angel*, sits for this gelatin silver portrait dated April 14, 1937, taken by Carl Van Vechten, the writer and photographer who made a practice of photographing the literary and artistic figures of his day. The print carries Van Vechten's own catalog number, which places it among the many celebrity portraits he gave to the Library of Congress in 1966 after his estate's gift. Wolfe was then at the height of his reputation, and his large, sprawling novels made him one of the most discussed American writers of the 1930s.
