A straight-on bust portrait of Charles "Lucky" Luciano, the New York gangster born Salvatore Lucania in Sicily in 1897. The picture dates to 1936, the year he was convicted on prostitution-related charges in a case brought by Manhattan prosecutor Thomas E. Dewey, and he received a sentence of 30 to 50 years. The frontal pose is typical of the official and press photographs that made his face familiar to newspaper readers of the period. Luciano was later deported to Italy in 1946 and died in Naples in 1962.
