Rather than a view of the river or the streets, this picture shows a moment of arrival: the landing of Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac's wife at the settlement he founded on the Detroit River in 1701. The photograph reproduces a painting by Gari Melchers, so what it records is the artist's staging of the scene rather than the event itself. Cadillac's wife, Marie-Thérèse, joined him at the post after its founding, and the story became a popular way to picture the city's French origins. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many views of the city, produced this reproduction around 1921.
