Looking southwest over downtown Detroit, this c1905 scene is anchored by a church tower in the foreground, with the Pingree Shoe Factory and Murphy Power Building rising behind it. The shoe factory was linked to Hazen Pingree, a shoe manufacturer who later served as mayor of Detroit, which ties the building to the city's industrial and civic life of the period. The picture was made on an 11 by 14 inch glass negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format city views circulated widely in the early twentieth century. Its mix of church spire and factory walls offers a useful record of how commerce and worship shared the same skyline.
