Late winter light falls across a wooded valley seen from a grassy overlook along the Natchez Trace Parkway, a route that follows the old Natchez Trace, a path worn by generations of travelers, traders and military couriers across what is now Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee. The parkway was built as a scenic road in the 1930s and 1940s, and its pull-offs were designed to frame views like this one, where bare hardwoods let the land below show its folds and ravines. Without leaves, the trees reveal the shape of the terrain, which is one reason winter is a good season to see the Trace's quieter scenery.
