Few spots on the White House grounds were as tied to the daily life of the presidency as the conservatory, which this 1900 stereograph shows. Its glass houses supplied plants and cut flowers for the mansion's rooms, and the gardeners who tended them worked largely out of public view. Stereographs like this one sold in great numbers at the turn of the century. Viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, the two nearly identical photographs merged into a single three-dimensional scene, which let Americans far from Washington feel they had toured the executive mansion.
