Few railroad views from the Dakota Territory frontier are as striking as this one, which shows a horseshoe curve on the Burlington and Missouri River Railway near Custer City, South Dakota, with the Harney Range rising behind it. The 1891 date places the scene in the years when rail lines were pushing into the Black Hills country and reshaping mining and ranching towns. Photographer John C. H. Grabill spent much of his career documenting the West, and his work captures the engineering it took to carry track over rugged ground. Look closely at the curve itself to see how the line bends around the hillside.
