Few stretches of track in America are as recognizable as the Horseshoe Curve, where the Pennsylvania Railroad wraps a tight arc around the face of the Allegheny Mountains near Altoona. Here the line climbs at about 90 feet to the mile, and trains had to loop back on themselves to gain elevation without an impossibly steep grade. The curve opened in 1854 and became one of the busiest sections of the railroad, with helper engines often assisting heavy freights up the slope. This view, published by the H.C. White Co. of Chicago around 1907, shows a train working its way around the bend, a reminder of how much effort it once took to cross the Alleghenies.
