Men of the Pennsylvania Railroad are shown talking over a strike, a subject that pressed hard on the country's rail lines for much of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The title, "Penn. R.R. men talk strike," comes from caption data the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its card, and the record gives no date or specific dispute, so that label is unconfirmed. Bain's agency sold New York news photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, which makes pictures like this useful for seeing how labor unrest was reported in print. Railroad walkouts had been a national issue since the 1877 strikes, and the Pennsylvania was one of the largest carriers affected.
