The Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, is a sweeping bend of track cut into the side of the Allegheny Mountains, built in 1854 by the Pennsylvania Railroad to carry trains over a steep grade without the locomotives losing their footing. The curve's engineering made it one of the most important stretches of rail in the country, since it linked the eastern seaboard with the Midwest through the mountain barrier. By the time this view was made, the route still carried heavy freight and passenger traffic, and its tight arc remains a landmark of American railroad history.
