Pittsburgh's skyline in 1907 was a smoky, industrial one, shaped by the steel mills, rail yards and river traffic that crowded the point where the Allegheny and Monongahela meet to form the Ohio. A view titled "PA Sky line view of Pittsburg" from that year captures a city at the height of its manufacturing boom, when the steel and glass industries were pushing the population and building density upward. The soot from furnaces and locomotives was so heavy that Pittsburgh was widely called the "Smoky City," and the air that hung over its rooftops is part of what makes early views like this one worth a closer look.
