The Jefferson Building, the Library of Congress's main building on Capitol Hill, opened in 1897 in a lavish Beaux-Arts style, with a dome, marble halls, and sculpture and murals by many American artists. This ca. 1946 view, taken from the east, shows the building alongside the expansion that followed it. The Library had outgrown its original home, and the Adams Building, completed in 1939, was added to hold more of the collection and staff. Photographs like this one record how the Library's campus grew around its founding structure, which was named for Thomas Jefferson, whose personal book collection became the basis of the Library's holdings after the British burned the Capitol in 1814.
