Two boys in half-length pose appear on this sixth-plate daguerreotype, a small format that fit easily into the hinged cases popular in the 1850s. The case has a mixed-flower design on the front and a cross on the back, and the plate bears a maker's hallmark. The sitters are probably George F. Becker and Alexander Rudolph Becker, identified by resemblance to carte-de-visite portraits in a related lot, and the 1849 to 1860 date rests on the boys' apparent ages. George Ferdinand Becker, born in 1847, later became a noted geologist, and family papers at the Library of Congress preserve context for pictures like this one.
