Few products of the 1850s were marketed as directly to parents as Dr. Wieland's sugar worm lozenges, which promised to rid children of intestinal worms in a form they would willingly swallow. Mid-century patent medicines often sold on bold claims and eye-catching wrappers, and a label like this one was meant to win over a shopkeeper or a household at a glance. The print was drawn on stone by A. Kollner, a Philadelphia lithographer, at a time when that city's shops produced much of the country's commercial printing. The copyright notice in the record shows that Wieland guarded his design, a sign of how much a recognizable label could be worth in a crowded market.
