Burro trains at Indian Gardens, a shaded spring-fed stop about 3,800 feet below the South Rim, is the detail that sets this picture apart from the canyon views that usually fill such collections. Here the focus is on the animals and the people who relied on them, since mule and burro strings carried visitors, supplies and mail up and down the trails long before paved roads reached the rim. Around 1906 the Grand Canyon was still a remote destination, and the stop at Indian Gardens was a working rest point along the Bright Angel route.
