Tucked inside Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim, this stereograph shows a barber shop, an unexpected corner of a rustic mountain hotel perched above the canyon. The lodge was a showpiece of the Union Pacific's Utah Parks Company, built to make a remote stay feel comfortable and civilized. Keystone View Company, based in Meadville, Pennsylvania, produced stereo cards like this for parlor viewers, so the scene was meant for armchair travelers who would never reach the rim. The date on the card, January 31 of about 1929, comes from the caption and is not independently verified.
