Few interiors from the North Rim's early years survive in print, which makes this stereograph of the Grand Canyon Lodge dining room unusual. The lodge, designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood and opened in 1928, was built of local stone and timber, and its dining room was arranged to draw guests' attention to the canyon through its large windows. Keystone View Company, a major American publisher of stereo cards, issued this view around 1929. When seen through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical halves of the card merge into a single image with depth, a popular way for travelers and armchair visitors to experience national parks in that era.
