Motor buses stand at the Union Pacific Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim, the lodge the railroad built in the late 1920s to bring tourists to the less-visited side of the canyon. Because the rail line did not reach the North Rim, visitors usually completed the trip by motor coach across the Kaibab Plateau, and the scene shows how automobile travel had become central to national park tourism. The picture is a stereograph, meant to be viewed through a stereoscope so the two nearly identical images merge into one three-dimensional view. Keystone View Company, a major American publisher of these cards, issued it, and the date given on the card, around 1929, is unverified.
