This photograph shows the De Dion motor carriage numbered "#2," one of the early light cars built by the French firm De Dion-Bouton, which was founded in Paris in the 1880s. The company's small, fast single-cylinder engines were used by many other automakers, and its vehicles helped establish the gasoline automobile as a practical alternative to horse-drawn carriages around 1900. The record credits E. Chickering with the copyright, which places the image among the many commercial and studio views of the period that documented new motor vehicles for a curious public.
