The Grand Canyon Railway Station and a waiting train are the particular subjects here, placing the picture at the end of the line rather than on the rim itself. The Santa Fe Railway's spur to the South Rim opened in 1901, and by the mid-1900s the depot was the gateway through which most visitors arrived before stepping onto the Grand Canyon's overlooks. The record's date of about 1906 comes from a caption card and has not been independently verified, so it is best read as an approximate date. Notice how the station and train dominate the frame, a reminder that rail travel, not automobiles, was then what made the canyon accessible to tourists.
