Sam Houston appears here in civilian dress, turned three-quarters to the left and clean shaven in this half-length daguerreotype. Gold toning gives the half-plate its warm tone, and the plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1848 and 1850. Houston had led Texas to independence at San Jacinto in 1836, served as president of the Texas Republic, and was then a United States senator. The sitter's identity rests on comparison with an 1856 lithograph in Huber's *History of Texas*.
