A New Year's Eve gala midnight show in San Diego, billed as a vaudeville frolic with 15 acts, is the event this 1936 poster advertises. It was issued under the Federal theater Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration that put actors, writers, and stagehands back to work during the Great Depression. The WPA poster units printed many such announcements in silkscreen, using flat, bold color blocks that made them cheap to reproduce and easy to read from a distance. Its marketing of a single lavish night of entertainment reflects how public theater was promoted to working audiences in the 1930s.
