A silkscreen poster advertising "Vaudeville Frolic," a Federal Road Show attraction, stands out for its tie to San Bernardino, California, a city that hosted these touring productions during the mid-1930s. The Federal theater Project, one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration, sent traveling troupes like this one into small towns and communities that rarely saw live stage shows. Vaudeville, with its mix of comedy, song, and specialty acts, had declined as a commercial form by the 1930s, so reviving it through government-backed touring gave working audiences an affordable evening out. The poster's bold color and flat graphic style reflect the silkscreen techniques the WPA poster units used to produce work cheaply in quantity.
