Wilberforce University in Xenia, Ohio, is the subject here, and the title, "The colored peoples college," marks it as an early school for Black students. The institution was founded in 1856 by Methodist Episcopal church members and named for William Wilberforce, the British abolitionist. The color lithograph was drawn and printed by Middleton, Wallace & Co. of Cincinnati, a firm known for printed views of towns and institutions in that period. The date range of 1850 to 1860 is an estimate, so the buildings shown may reflect the campus in its first years.
