Few river scenes from the late nineteenth century were as widely reproduced as the moonlit steamboat views that Cincinnati printers turned out in color. This chromolithograph, issued by the Krebs Lithographing Co. around 1880, shows a paddle steamer working the Ohio under a bright moon, a subject that captured the river trade at its height. Chromolithography used a separate stone for each color, so the soft blues of the water and the pale glow of the sky were built up in layers by hand-registered printing. Prints like this one were sold to hang in homes, offices and hotels, and they show how the Ohio River and its steamboats were pictured as emblems of American commerce.
