Korea in the late 1800s and early 1900s relied heavily on human and animal power for getting around, and this print records that world through the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection at the Library of Congress. Frank Carpenter was a American travel writer and correspondent who toured Asia and filled his articles and books with images and descriptions of daily life, so the picture was made to show ordinary people and their means of travel rather than as an artistic portrait. Carriages and other conveyances like it appear in many of his photographs, offering a view of how goods and travelers moved through a country that was then undergoing rapid change.
