This is a photograph of a drawing that lays out the design of Walter Wellman's airship, the craft he hoped would carry a crew over the North Pole. Wellman, a newspaper correspondent and polar explorer, built his airships in the early 1900s and tried to reach the pole from Spitsbergen. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the news photo archive whose pictures document much of the period's press coverage. The caption information is unverified, so the drawing's exact date and origin are uncertain.
