Few WPA posters of the war focus on Australia, which makes this 1941 silkscreen by Detroit artist Charles Pollock stand out on the board. Australia had entered the war in September 1939, and by 1941 its troops were fighting in North Africa, Greece and Crete. After Japan entered the conflict in December 1941, Australians felt their own coastline threatened, a fear that later shaped the Pacific campaign. The Federal Art Project sponsored the poster, so it reflects how American government artists chose to present an allied nation's wartime struggle.
