Few pictures on this board turn a patriotic ritual into a warning as neatly as this one, using the words of the Pledge of Allegiance to urge wartime discretion. The pencil note on the back credits Thomas A. Byrne as designer, and the Federal Art Project sponsored the work under the Work Projects Administration, whose artists produced silkscreen posters for public messages during the Second World War. Its flag motif and slogan reflect the security campaigns of 1941, when officials worried about careless talk. A date stamp of January 1943 shows the poster was still in use well into the war.
