What about India?" sets the question against a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, pointing to a debate the Allied war effort could not easily avoid in 1941. When Britain declared India at war in 1939 without consulting its elected leaders, the Indian National Congress protested, so the question of self-rule became tied to the fight against fascism. Maurice Merlin, a Detroit artist working under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, made this silkscreen print, one of many posters that used graphic design to address the war at home and abroad.
